The Tongue Piercing

~

The Tongue Piercing is usually done in the centre of the tongue and usually 2-3 cm back from the tip (depending on the particular tongue to be pierced of course). There are often large veins in the tongue and it is extremely important not to pierce them, a Professional Body Piercer will know where they are so go to a Professional! The Tongue piercing is a very popular piercing, and like many piercings, are a lot of fun. During the first week the fresh tongue piercing can be annoying as they can be sore and swollen. The swelling usually last between 3 and 10 days, it varies between people but the swelling can be minimised by sucking on ice and sipping ice water regularly during the first few days. Treating your tongue piercing gently by eating soft foods, eating slowly and talking less will help it heal quicker and with less chance of problems. Don't play with it & don't keep poking your tongue out, as this can cause problems during the healing stage and be carefull not to bite on the jewellery too as this can damage teeth!

Healing Time

Tongue Piercings tend to heal quite fast, usually in around 3-4 weeks. The first week of healing is the most awkward. For some people it can be hard to talk perfectly and hard to eat. Eating soft food such as pasta and soup etc make that first week easier. The barbell used for the inital piercing is longer than the thickness of your tongue to allow for swelling, this can feel awkward but its necessary. After about 3 weeks it is usually possible to downsize to a shorter barbell which makes life much easier and also reduces the chance of you accidentally biting down on the barbell which can damage your teeth. Be Carefull!

Tongue Jewellery

Barbells are the most common type of jewellery worn in tongue piercings and we at ADRENALIN use high quality Titanium Barbells for the intial tongue piercing. Titanium is nice and light compared to surgical steel jewellery too and therefore more confortable in the mouth. Another advantage to light Titanium barbells is when/if it bumps against your teeth it doesn't hit with as much force compared to a heavier stainless steel barbell. It is also very important to be pierced with a barbell which is long enough to allow the tongue to swell without the balls on the barbell pulling into the tongue. Once the piercing has fully healed though, you will probably be able to wear a shorter barbell. Some people may prefer to wear a barbell with a disc on the underside of the tongue instead of a ball, once the piercing has fully healed. This option is sometimes preferred if the piercing is close to the tip of the tongue. However this type of barbell can be more difficult to tighten up compared with a standard barbell with balls on both ends.

Once your piercing has fully healed you can change your jewellery whenever you wish. But to avoid complications you should always wear good quality body jewellery of appropriate size and thickness. There is a huge range of Body Jewellery available at ADRENALIN. Some people even like to stretch their tongue piercing to accomodate thicker jewellery.
